Pepe, whose full name is Képler Laverán Lima Ferreira, was actually born in Brazil but chose to represent Portugal, making his international debut in 2007. His father named him “Kepler Laveran” in a unique tribute to the scientists Johannes Kepler and Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran. Over a monumental 17-year international career, Pepe earned 141 caps and scored 8 goals, becoming a symbol of the nation’s “warrior” spirit.

A true giant of the game, Pepe was central to Portugal’s greatest ever triumphs. He was named Man of the Match in the historic Euro 2016 final victory against France and also helped the side secure the inaugural UEFA Nations League title in 2019.
