Gianluca Vialli remains a cornerstone of Chelsea history, arriving in 1996 as part of the “continental revolution” that transformed English football. Known affectionately as “The Lion King” and celebrated with the “That’s Amore” chant, he was a master of both style and substance. Interestingly, Vialli was born to a wealthy family and grew up in a 60-room castle in Cremona, yet he was renowned for a tireless work ethic that inspired his teammates.

His time at the Bridge was truly record-breaking; in 1998, he became the first Italian to manage in the Premier League and the youngest manager at the time, aged just 33, to win a UEFA competition. Before his first game in charge—a League Cup semi-final against Arsenal—he famously handed out glasses of champagne to his players in the dressing room as a toast to a new era; the team responded by winning 3-1. In total, he delivered five trophies in less than three years, making him the club’s most successful manager until the Jose Mourinho era. Beyond the silverware, he was a charismatic figure who worked hard on his English, often being taught “cheeky” idioms by captain Dennis Wise to use in media interviews.
