Uwe Rosler became a bona fide cult hero at Manchester City following his arrival from FC Nuremberg in 1994, scoring 64 goals in 176 appearances. During a turbulent era at Maine Road, the German striker provided a rare beacon of hope, famously earning the club’s Player of the Year award in his first full season. He is perhaps most fondly remembered for the “Uwe’s Grandad” chant—a humorous, fictitious claim that his grandfather bombed the Stretford End—which Rosler himself embraced with a smile, even framing one of the original T-shirts in his apartment. His connection to the club remains deeply personal; he named his sons Colin and Tony after City legends Colin Bell and Tony Book, and his son Colin even followed in his footsteps by joining the City academy. Most poignantly, during his 2003 battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Rosler credits the 46,000 fans at the City of Manchester Stadium with giving him the strength to recover after hearing them sing his name down a telephone line from his hospital bed. Inducted into the City Hall of Fame in 2009, his legacy as “Der Bomber” is forever etched in the club’s history.
