Affectionately known as “El Nene” (The Kid) for his boyish looks and prodigious talent, Cubillas remains the gold standard for South American midfielders. He is one of only three players in history—alongside Miroslav Klose and Gerd Müller—to have scored five or more goals in two different World Cup tournaments (1970 and 1978). His impact was so immense that after the 1970 World Cup, Pelé famously remarked, “Don’t worry, I already have a successor and it is Teófilo Cubillas”. He is perhaps most fondly remembered in the UK for his “trivela” free-kick against Scotland in 1978, a shot hit with the outside of his boot that defied physics and remains one of the most studied set-pieces in FIFA’s archives. Beyond his ten World Cup goals, Cubillas led Peru to victory in the Copa América of 1975, where he was named the tournament’s best player, and he famously beat Pelé to the South American Footballer of the Year award in 1972. Remarkably, throughout a professional career spanning 21 years, he was never once sent off, embodying the spirit of a true gentleman of the game.
