Rowan Alexander is undeniably a true Greenock Morton legend, affectionately known as “Super Ro” by the faithful. He joined Morton in August 1986 and went on to make 358 appearances, scoring an incredible 122 goals, which makes him the joint fourth-highest goalscorer in the club’s history. Despite being just 5ft 7 inches tall, Alexander was renowned for his amazing aerial ability and strength, often hanging in the air to score headers. He famously scored on his debut with a perfect bicycle kick and would celebrate with his trademark forward roll! He was the club’s top scorer in his debut season, helping Morton secure promotion to the Premier Division, and was top scorer in five of his nine seasons at Cappielow. A notable highlight includes scoring a classic header as Morton beat Rangers at Cappielow for the first time since 1916. His time at Morton, during which he commuted a 200-mile round trip from Dumfries for training, was acknowledged by Alexander himself as “the best 10 years of his football career”, and he was rightly inducted into the Greenock Morton Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
