John McGovern is best remembered for his incredible seven-year spell at Nottingham Forest, where he captained the team during the most successful period in the club’s history.
McGovern led Forest to two consecutive European Cup victories in 1979 (defeating Malmö FF) and 1980 (defeating Hamburger SV).
He was an integral part of Brian Clough’s greatest achievements, having also played under him at Hartlepools United, Derby County, and Leeds United—Clough’s “first pick” at four different clubs.
Interesting Fact: Despite his immense club success and Scottish heritage, McGovern is one of only two Scottish players to win UEFA’s premier club trophy without ever earning a full international cap for Scotland.
He also won the First Division title with Forest in 1978 and two consecutive League Cups (1978 and 1979), completing one of the most remarkable rises in English football history.
