John Dempsey was a pivotal figure in Chelsea’s most successful period of the early 1970s. Joining the club in 1969, the powerful and combative centre-back quickly became a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge. He was instrumental in Chelsea’s triumphs, most notably helping them win the 1970 FA Cup against Leeds United and, even more famously, the 1971 European Cup Winners’ Cup in Athens against Real Madrid. Dempsey scored a crucial equalising goal in the first European final, showcasing his impact at both ends of the pitch. He made over 200 appearances for the club during his distinguished spell.
