Georgi Kinkladze arrived at Manchester City in 1995 from Dinamo Tbilisi for £2 million and instantly became a beacon of hope during a turbulent era for the club. A diminutive player with an exceptionally low centre of gravity, his balance was attributed to childhood training in traditional Georgian ballet and gymnastics. He is most famously remembered for his breathtaking solo goal against Southampton on 16 March 1996, where he slalomed past five defenders before dinking the ball over goalkeeper Dave Beasant—a strike voted second in Match of the Day’s “Goal of the Season”. Despite City’s relegation in 1996, “Kinky” stayed loyal to the club for two more seasons, earning the Player of the Year award twice in a row and cementing his status as a legend. He was so adored that Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher famously remarked his signing was either the “best or most frightening thing” he’d seen, and fans even adapted the hit “Wonderwall” to sing his praises from the Kippax stand.
