Born in Glasgow, Billy Connolly originally worked as a welder in the city’s shipyards before starting his entertainment career as a folk singer in the band The Humblebums alongside Gerry Rafferty. His nickname, “The Big Yin” (The Big One), originated during his teenage years simply to differentiate him from his father, William, who was known as “The Wee Yin”. He famously cemented his place in comedy history in 1975 when he commissioned a pair of custom-made size 9 banana boots from pop artist Edmund Smith, which he wore on stage to huge acclaim. From his humble beginnings to receiving a knighthood in 2017, Connolly’s storytelling style, observational humour, and infectious energy have made him one of the most beloved and influential comedians in the world.
