Interesting Facts:
The First Sub: In 1966, while playing for St Mirren, Archie Gemmill became the first-ever tactical substitute in Scottish football history when he replaced Jim Clunie in a League Cup tie.
The “Flying” Transfer: Brian Clough was so determined to sign Gemmill for Derby County in 1970 that he famously refused to leave Archie’s house until the deal was signed, eventually staying the night and finalising the transfer over breakfast the next morning.
National Hero: Gemmill earned 43 caps for Scotland and had the honour of captaining the national side on 22 occasions.
The Family Legacy: His son, Scot Gemmill, followed in his footsteps, earning 26 caps for Scotland and later managing the Scotland Under-21 side.
Cultural Icon: The goal is so famous it was even immortalised in the film Trainspotting, where Ewan McGregor’s character famously exclaims he hasn’t felt that good since Archie Gemmill scored against Holland.
