Tugay Kerimoğlu remains a true cult hero in East Lancashire, having spent eight magnificent seasons at Ewood Park after being signed by Graeme Souness from Rangers in 2001. Over 270 appearances, he became the heartbeat of the Rovers midfield, winning the League Cup in 2002 and helping the club compete in multiple European campaigns.

Tugay was famously a “player’s player.” His manager at Rovers, Mark Hughes, once remarked that Tugay was either “born ten years too early or played ten years too late,” because his incredible vision and technical ability would have suited any world-class side. Even Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that if Tugay had been ten years younger, he would have been the perfect fit for Manchester United.
