To the Middlesbrough faithful, he was simply “The King.” Arriving from Sheffield Wednesday in 1966 for a modest fee, Hickton went on to become an absolute titan of the club, making 499 appearances and netting a staggering 193 goals—placing him fourth on the club’s all-time scoring list. Originally signed as a defender, it was a tactical masterstroke to move him upfront, where his power and precision made him a nightmare for opposition backlines.

He is perhaps most fondly remembered for his unique penalty-taking style; Hickton would often start his run-up from well outside the penalty area, charging towards the ball with unstoppable momentum. He was a pivotal figure in Jack Charlton’s record-breaking 1973-74 side that stormed to the Second Division title, providing the fire-power that saw Boro return to the top flight in emphatic style. His loyalty and goalscoring prowess earned him a permanent place in the hearts of supporters, and his legacy is still celebrated at the Riverside Stadium today.
