Bernie Slaven is a name etched into the very fabric of Middlesbrough, having arrived from Partick Thistle in 1985 for just £25,000. He famously stuck by the club during the dark days of 1986 when Boro were locked out of Ayresome Park and faced liquidation. Slaven became the spearhead of the “resurrection” team that achieved back-to-back promotions from the Third to the First Division. Known affectionately as “The Wolfman”, he was a prolific finisher who netted 147 goals for the club, famously celebrating by jumping into the perimeter fences at Ayresome Park to celebrate with the fans. Despite being born in Scotland, Slaven qualified for the Republic of Ireland through his grandfather and was part of the legendary Italia ’90 squad. Interestingly, Bernie’s love for the club is so deep that even after retirement, he became a cult figure on local Teesside radio, famously promising to walk to Ayresome Park in his “man-kini” if Boro won at Old Trafford—a promise he actually fulfilled (though thankfully with a bit more coverage)!
