Paul McStay is a true Celtic icon, a ‘one-club man’ who spent his entire professional career with the team from 1982 until his retirement in 1997. He was a symbol of hope for the club during a “fallow period” in the 1990s, when he “shone like a beacon” through the team’s struggles. He was made club captain in 1990, a position he held until his final game. McStay’s loyalty and talent were rewarded when he captained the team to a 1995 Scottish Cup victory, ending a six-year trophy drought and bringing the club “fresh hope”. Such was his impact that he was later voted into the club’s greatest-ever team in 2002. He was also a key player in the Centenary Double-winning team of 1988. His family has a deep connection to Celtic, with his great-uncles and two brothers also playing for the club.
