Howard Wilkinson is a true icon of Elland Road, famously taking Leeds United from near the bottom of the Second Division in 1988 to English champions just four years later in 1992. To this day, he remains the last English manager to lift the top-flight title. Known affectionately as “Sergeant Wilko” for his uncompromising focus on fitness and discipline, the former PE teacher revolutionised the club from top to bottom. Beyond his 1991–92 First Division triumph, Wilkinson’s greatest legacy is arguably the creation of the world-class Thorp Arch academy system, which produced legendary talents like David Batty and Gary Speed. A 1992 Manager of the Year award winner, his impact was so profound that a fan-led project is currently working to erect a statue in his honour near the stadium.
