Derek Hales is arguably the greatest goalscorer in Charlton Athletic’s history. Across two spells at The Valley (1973–1976 and 1978–1985), he scored an incredible total of 168 goals in 368 appearances, becoming the club’s all-time record goalscorer. Known affectionately as ‘Killer’ for his predatory instincts in front of goal, Hales scored nearly all of his goals from within the penalty box. His flamboyant character and passionate commitment quickly made him a beloved cult hero with the Addicks faithful.
