Tony Mowbray—affectionately known as “Mogga”—is more than just a former player; he is the symbol of Middlesbrough’s survival. At just 22 years old, he captained the side during the terrifying summer of 1986 when the club was liquidated and the gates to Ayresome Park were padlocked. Under the management of Bruce Rioch, Mowbray led a squad of local lads to successive promotions, rising from the brink of extinction in the Third Division all the way to the First Division in just two seasons. His bravery and leadership inspired one of the most famous quotes in English football history, when Rioch declared: “If I had to fly a Spitfire into battle, I’d want Tony Mowbray at my side.” A local lad from Saltburn, Mowbray made 424 appearances for his boyhood club before later returning as manager in 2010 to steady the ship once again.
This T-shirt is the ideal way to pay tribute to a man who defines loyalty and whose name will forever be synonymous with the “Spirit of ’86.”
